# How do I use AI Chat in Opscompass Studio?

## Set up AI Chat, explore Opscompass data with Skills, and review answers, history, and artifacts.

**What is AI Chat?**
AI Chat is the conversational assistant in Opscompass Studio. You can ask questions in plain language, investigate resources discovered by Opscompass, and summarize findings without writing CLI commands yourself.

AI Chat uses Skills: specialized instructions and tools that help the assistant retrieve and analyze relevant data. It is separate from the Setup Assistant used to configure Studio.

**Before you begin**

- Use a Studio build that includes AI Chat. If the AI Chat controls are unavailable, contact your customer support representative to confirm access and the appropriate Studio version.
- Sign in to Opscompass and confirm the company you want to investigate. Complete the Studio Setup Assistant for the workflows you plan to use. Oracle data gathering also uses the selected license account and monitoring configuration.
- Have access to the data you want to analyze. Answers depend on the resources and evidence available in Opscompass.
- Have an API key for the OpenAI-compatible API endpoint your organization approves, plus its API URL if you use a custom OpenAI-compatible API endpoint. Opscompass sign-in and AI provider setup are separate.
- Allow the required network access to Opscompass and your OpenAI-compatible API endpoint.

For Studio installation and initial configuration, see [Opscompass Studio: Complete How-To Guide](https://kb.opscompass.com/knowledge/how-do-i-use-opscompass-studio).

**Set up AI Chat**
![AI Settings panel showing Provider, Credentials, API access, Model, and the AI Chat navigation rail](https://kb.opscompass.com/hs-fs/hubfs/image-png-Oct-29-2026-07-52-37-0812-PM.png?width=670&height=656&name=image-png-Oct-29-2026-07-52-37-0812-PM.png)
*AI Settings and the navigation rail. The model shown is an example; available models vary by installation.*

1. Open **Settings** in the AI Chat navigation rail.
2. Use **Model** to choose from the models available in your installation. Click **Save configuration** when enabled, and check the displayed **Provider** and **Credentials** status.
3. Click **Configure API key / URL**. If credentials are already configured, the button is labeled **Update API key / URL**.
4. In **Configure API access**, enter the **API key**. Enter an **API URL** if required for your OpenAI-compatible API endpoint. Leaving API URL blank uses **https://api.openai.com/v1**.
5. Click **Configure** to save API access. Enter credentials in this dialog, rather than in a chat message.
6. Back in Settings, confirm that Credentials shows **Configured**
7. Click **Start chat**.

![Configure API access dialog with an empty API key field, optional API URL field, and Cancel and Configure buttons](https://kb.opscompass.com/hs-fs/hubfs/image-png-Oct-29-2026-07-53-53-6523-PM.png?width=670&height=519&name=image-png-Oct-29-2026-07-53-53-6523-PM.png)

*Enter API access in the dedicated dialog. Both fields are empty in this screenshot; the URL shown in gray is a placeholder.*

The models shown by Studio can vary by installation. Use a model and OpenAI-compatible API endpoint approved by your organization; a Configured status does not guarantee that the OpenAI-compatible API endpoint will accept every request.

**Ask your first question**

1. Open **Current Chat** to use the active conversation, or **New Chat** to start a separate one.
2. Type a question in **Message**, then click **Send message**.
3. Review the response and any tool activity. Ask follow-up questions in the same conversation to refine the scope or investigate a finding.

Include the company, resource type, account or workload, and time period when relevant. For an investigation, you can specify: “Use read-only data. Do not change configuration or create files.”

**Skills and example questions**

**Resources**

The Resources Skill helps explore inventory, latest configuration, supported compliance findings, drift records, and workload hosting relationships. Examples include Oracle and SQL Server workloads and their cloud, VMware, or Nutanix infrastructure.

- “List the Oracle databases in my selected company and summarize their versions and editions.”
- “Which Oracle databases have open license compliance findings? Explain the findings and identify missing evidence.”
- “How many VMware ESXi hosts do we have? Count hosts, not virtual machines, and confirm whether all inventory pages were checked.”
- “Show the infrastructure hosting these SQL Server workloads and summarize the available configuration evidence.”

Compliance coverage depends on resource type. VMware and Nutanix investigations use configuration and relationship evidence; do not assume every resource has compliance checks.

**Oracle Licensing**

The Oracle Licensing Skill helps with an Oracle Optimized License Assessment (OLA), combining available workload, feature usage, entitlement, hosting, and compute evidence. It can also help compare Oracle licensing considerations for AWS target scenarios.

- “Perform an Oracle licensing assessment for these workloads. Summarize the evidence, assumptions, and gaps.”
- “Compare Amazon RDS for Oracle and Oracle on EC2 for these workloads. Explain which entitlement and sizing evidence is still needed.”

Usage findings alone do not establish license ownership or a definitive compliance position. Provide or authorize the entitlement and infrastructure evidence needed for the assessment, and review the conclusions with your licensing specialist.

Describe your goal in the prompt; the assistant uses the relevant Skill as needed. See \[What are Opscompass AI Skills?\](https://kb.opscompass.com/knowledge/opscompass-ai-skills) for background.

**Understand the response and tool activity**
Responses may include an execution count. Expand it to review the tools used and their status, such as **Completed** or **Failed**. A completed tool means that operation finished; it does not establish that the overall answer is complete or correct.
Check the company and resource scope, the evidence retrieved, data freshness, and any failed steps. Ask the assistant to separate findings from assumptions and explain missing data. A proposed query or failed lookup is not evidence that the requested data was retrieved.
Use **Stop** to interrupt a response and wait for activity to settle before starting another conversation. Stopping does not undo operations already completed. If Studio reports an execution limit, review completed work and narrow the next question.

**History, copying, and artifacts**

- **Current Chat** returns to the active conversation. Closing the panel hides it without clearing the conversation or message draft.
- **New Chat** starts a separate conversation without deleting earlier saved conversations.
- **History** lists saved conversations. Select one to resume it. If its model is unavailable, click **Choose model** and select an available model in Settings before continuing.- **Copy response** copies an individual answer.
- **Artifacts**, when available, lists files saved in Studio’s local AI workspace. Ask the assistant to save a report or table as a file, then check Artifacts after it confirms the file was saved. Use the file’s action menu and **Download** to choose a destination.

History and artifacts are local to the selected Studio environment and workspace. Do not assume they are shared between computers or automatically uploaded to Opscompass Document Manager. The Artifacts panel lists files at the workspace’s top level; it does not provide folder navigation.

**Troubleshooting**

**AI Chat is unavailable**
Use **Try again** if shown. Fully quit and reopen Studio. If the problem continues, contact support with your Studio version and the displayed error so they can confirm the supported build and access.

**AI provider setup is required, or a chat request fails**
Open **Settings** or **Open AI Settings**. Confirm the selected model, provider, API key, and API URL. Check your OpenAI-compatible API endpoint’s model access, usage limits, and account status. If Studio offers a provider billing link for a quota error, review that provider account. Check network or proxy access with your administrator if the OpenAI-compatible API endpoint cannot be reached.

**Opscompass data is missing or a tool fails**
Review the failed execution and its message. Confirm your Opscompass sign-in, company and account scope, access permissions, and whether the requested data has been collected. A provider credential problem and an Opscompass authentication problem require different fixes. Narrow the request and retry only after addressing the reported issue.

**History or Artifacts does not load**
Use **Retry** when offered. Confirm that you are using the same Studio environment and workspace. Artifacts availability depends on the capabilities included in your installed build.

**Important notes**

- AI generated content may be incorrect. Check important information against the underlying Opscompass data and source records.
- Keep requests specific and review tool activity before acting on a recommendation. Missing or old data can make a conclusion partial.
- Follow your organization’s policies for the data you include in prompts and the OpenAI-compatible API endpoint you configure.
- When contacting support, include the Studio version, displayed error, and a sanitized description of the request. Do not include API keys, passwords, or customer data that is not needed for troubleshooting.
